Acquaintance and farewell to Oculus Rift

I am as an avid player from an early age, I really love all sorts of exotic devices and new items. I try to squeeze all the juices from the system and configure any device for maximum comfort and quality. And then my hands finally got to Oculus Rift ..

I won’t have for a long time, I will just say to our company in which I work, have been bent for 25 years. On this occasion, our chef decided to arrange an open day and scared his computer to work with an okulus for demonstrations. Entering everyone up to the course of business, we began to test this curiosity. Various demos, mini games, cartoons and other crap have brought us wild delight. It would seem, here it is, the future … complete freedom in the review, realistic 3D models that you still want to touch and voluminous sound – all this is damn well in the virtual world. After a dozen of such tests, we all with satisfied faces went to do other things and in our heads there were only positive emotions. At least run and buy yourself such a device.

At this point, most go to people end in a short but intensive acquaintance with virtual reality. But not with me!

After all, now I will change places with the chef and will become the owner of the okulus … well, almost. In general, I managed to beg this device home and play enough at the weekend. I especially wanted to launch a mega ligament from Dirt Rally, the steering wheel (Logitech G27), the OKULUS and the BUTTKique BAS Mechanical Amplifier. After all, everything except the helmet I already had.
And so I come happy home and start the installation … You know what seven circles of hell? No? Let me tell you!

Layer 8 Problem?
The helmet software uses the nasty system of the online installer. That is, you have a program that shakes and sets another program. Resembles the film “Beginning” with double dreams. So, having downloaded 800MB – the installation of the services of an okulus begins, which flies out with an error. After which you need to re -download 800MB and so on before losing the pulse. Putting through the forums, I found out that such “losers” like me, a car and a small cart. By incredible manipulations with the register and reinstalling many subsidiaries – the installation was completed, after about the sixteenth attempt and four hours of time. (800 * 16 = 12.8 gigabyt) further – setting, calibration, updating and installing the games themselves. Only on the second day I still managed to play. And you know what? After an hour of the game, the whole hype came to naught. A headache began. Large pixels on a plain background began to cut into the eyes, bugs and flaws became noticeable. The same Steamvr, for example, is not in a hurry to make friends with the okulus. The guidance does not work, the controller from the X-Box 360 does not support all the functions, and the launch of some games in the VR mode has turned into complete hemorrhoids with the installation of mods and digging in configuration files. Half-Life 2 and TF2 generally refused to start in a helmet, since in Steam they have not yet updated the core for the consumer version of the okulus. These are the pies.

The same Dirt Rally was the most significant blow to me. The game to my surprise completely calmly made friends with the helmet and the steering wheel, but as soon as the race began, I realized – this is kapets. I was enough for literally two minutes, after which I went to the bed with a nausea attack. Excessive realism can play a cruel joke. In the game you are pushing you, but in reality there is no. The brain goes crazy and sends you to dull. That is why the developers of many announced shooters abandoned the usual movement of the character in favor of the so -called “teleports”.

So it turns out a rather ambiguous situation. While you are fed pre -prepared, selected materials – you enjoy. But as soon as you decide to dig deeper – you immediately understand how damp technology entered the market. This can be called a kind of “alpha test” before the big future. The developers have chosen a very correct direction for development and now you can see how far progress has gone compared to unsuccessful prototypes from the 90s. (Hi Nintendo Virtual Boy) What we have now is impressive, but absolutely not suitable for a large market.

One thing for me is clear for me – the foundation is laid down. And if in the next 10 years there is no end to the world, then we will definitely see the new technical revolution, which will become everyday business in our lives, which in turn, smartphones became.
